Timber

Today a friend of mine helped mow grass from around 2 acres of new trees that we had commercially planted this spring. We planted White Oak, Walnut, Bur Oak, and Shellbark Hickory. This is the 2nd time we have mowed the grass. It badly needed it. The grass this time was Knee high. There were portions we didn't mow before because we couldn't find all the trees. We let the grass get to high. I located the rows and put in orange flags to help us find them.

We saw 2 deer today. The mosquitoes and face flies were terrible. We mowed for about 2 1/2 hours.

Dale used a Grasshopper mower and I used his DR tall grass and brush mower. It worked well, but it was 91 degrees and the humidity was very high. It was worth it though. Originally we planted about 800 trees that we purchased from the State of Iowa Nursery. Our success ratio is about 90% which is very good.
